That is the Smart car if I am correct? We had some as vehicles for workers to drive around in them back in Las Vegas. Had them because they were so cheap, but drivers did not like them that much. I only took it for a spin around the block and it felt like an oversized golf cart. Slow, not good handling and so small compared to other cars on the road, only being a two seater and all. And this is dealing with driving them in a place with basically zero precipitation and mostly new roads. Couldn't even imagine dealing with Buffalo weather and pot hole filled roads in one of those.

If you only plan to drive a couple miles a day, it could work for you, but for regular travel I would probably recommend a regular vehicle.

The ride is awful, the transmission sucks, it's a pain to work on the engine, and the highway fuel economy isn't very good. A Honda Fit is larger, costs less, and is more fuel efficient, AND has a better resale value. A Smart car is only worth considering if you only have 8' to park a car in. Might make sense if you live in midtown Manhattan, or the 3eme arrondissement of Paris, but nowhere else.

I test drove one and they're fun to drive but to me, not a primary vehicle. I definitely wouldn't want to drive on any thruway in one but they're perfect for scooting around the neighborhood.

  2. Thanks all.  This would be neighborhood driving really.  Car for the city.  Consumer reports is not a fan.

A friend who is a car guru basically reiterated what Alex C said - they are more a gimmick than anything (and for people with extreme space limitations). You can get a somewhat larger, safer sub-compact with as good or better gas mileage that actually has space to put things and handles much better, with more comfort. Think about getting groceries (or anything beyond two or three bags) in that thing. Also they are extremely low to the ground. I can imagine you would feel every tiny bump. In addition they would require very specialized parts and labor - forget taking it anywhere but the dealer and expect to pay top dollar for service.

If that is anither name of the smart carbthat Dan K is referring, i am ditto to Alex C's point. Had that ine for about 19 month while I was living in Paris last year for work, it's just fit to drive around in a old city with lots of small and narrow side streets. You xan literally think of a scooter with roof, windows and higher max. speed.
